New York DVD

From the earliest days of the Dutch settlement at New Amsterdam to the challenges the city faces as it heads into the new millenium, NEW YORK tells the dramatic, four-century story of America's greatest city.

The five episodes of this comprehensive set were directed and produced by acclaimed documentary filmmaker, Ric Burns. They include:

  • The Country and the City--From the first settlers to the opening of the Erie Canal.
  • Order and Disorder--As the city grows, the social fabric strains and frays.
  • Sunshine and Shadow--The post Civil War era is a gilded age for New York, but the divisions in society deepen.
  • The Power and the People--Immigration transforms the city and a wave of building changes its face.
  • Cosmopolis--The Roaring 20s were quieted by the crash of '29, but in the silence that follows a new symbol arises.
