The Chaos Behind Bars

In 1971, the prisoners at the state prison in Attica, New York seized 39 hostages and a quarter of the grounds. The end came four days later, when police stormed the prison, killing 29 prisoners and 10 hostages. It was the bloodiest day on American soil in a century.

THE ATTICA RIOTS: CHAOS BEHIND BARS is an in-depth look at the explosive forces inside America's prisons. Interviews with inmates, guards, officials and politicians explore the conditions that contribute to the deadly outbreaks, and question what can be done to prevent them. Take a close look at some of the worst cases in American history including Attica and the New Mexico State Penitentiary incident where 33 inmates who were identified as "snitches" were tortured, butchered and even beheaded. Graphic footage from these events captures the horror and asks what can be done to prevent such outbreaks in the future.
